MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Feb. 21, 2014)-- Three unearned runs in the second inning proved the difference-maker on Friday night as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball squad had its season opener spoiled by host Barry University, falling 5-2 at Feinbloom Field.
The Rangers (0-1) drew first blood, plating a run on a
Jake Kolasinski two-out single to center field before ending the inning with two stranded on base.
The Buccaneers (9-2) got on the board in the bottom of the frame, with Branden Shaw leading off the inning with an infield single. Shaw advanced to second on a groundout before stealing third and scoring on a throwing error to tie the game.
Barry tacked on three more unearned scores in the bottom of the second, stringing together three straight hits before capitalizing on another Ranger throwing error to grab the 4-1 lead.
UW-Parkside put a dent in the Barry lead with a run in the top of the fifth but the Buccaneers answered with an insurance run in the sixth to conclude the scoring as Parkside was held hitless the final three innings.
Kris Zarek opened the fifth with a bunt single before advancing a base on a
Zach Cunningham single. Zarek crossed the plate for the Rangers' second run off a
Zach Thompson RBI single up the middle.
DJ Peltz finished two-for-four at the plate while Thompson was two-for-five to lead UW-Parkside. The Rangers belted out eight hits on the evening but stranded eight runners on base of the course of the contest.
Cole Kroncke absorbed the loss on the mound, tossing five innings and allowing four hits and four unearned runs.
Josh Serio handled the final three innings in relief, striking out five and allowing one earned run.
Barry's Billy Atkins tallied the win, logging the opening five innings and striking out three while Joeanthony Rivera claimed the save, striking out two in a three-up, three-down ninth inning.
The two squads continue the series on Saturday, squaring off in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. (Eastern).
