ROLLA, Mo. (Feb. 15, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball squad erased a nine-point deficit to force overtime but in the end was unable to outlast host Missouri University S&T on Saturday afternoon, falling 72-69 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference clash at Billy Key Court.
Danielle Slivka and
Gaby Bronson each finished with a double-double in a volatile game featuring 10 lead changes and 11 ties.
The opening 15 minutes of play saw neither squad own an advantage of more than four points. The homestanding Lady Miners (10-13, 5-10 GLVC) utilized a 9-2 run to build a game-high nine-point 31-22 buffer with 2:26 left before halftime. Slivka knocked down a pair of free throws as UW-Parkside (7-16, 3-12 GLVC) trailed 31-24 at the halftime break.
Missouri S&T opened the second half with a bucket to extend its buffer back up to nine before the Rangers utilized a 9-0 surge to tie the game at 33 with 15:13 left. Slivka started the rally with a layup before getting threes from
Tara Knapstein and Bronson while Knapstein provided the equalizing bucket at the free throw line.
The Miners built their advantage back up to five with 11:39 left and again with 11:05 left but UW-Parkside netted the next seven, seizing the lead on a Knapstein three with 8:59 left. S&T struck back, reestablishing a five-point cushion with 2:25 remaining. Bronson sliced the gap to just two with a trey before Slivka tied the game at 58 with 1:20 left. A
Sarah Mlachnik steal and layup gave the visitors the 60-58 edge with 32 ticks left before S&T's Toni Knar hit a layup with seven seconds left to tie the contest and force a five-minute overtime session.
S&T tallied eight of the first 11 points in overtime and made four free throws down the stretch to hold on for the three-point victory.
Slivka paced all scorers with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Bronson tallied 16 points and 10 boards. Knapstein, just two days removed from a 20-point outburst, poured on 17 in the losing effort.
Knar led Missouri S&T with 21 points while Kylie Cooper added 18 and Karli Sample collected 14 points and a team-best eight rebounds.
UW-Parkside forced 17 turnovers on the afternoon and held a 21-15 edge in points off turnovers. The Rangers shot 35.3 percent from the field (24-for-68) while the hosts hit 46.7 percent (21-for-45) of their opportunities.
Parkside begins its final homestand on the season next week, hosting McKendree University on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
