WHITEWATER, Wis. (Feb. 13, 2014)-- Fielding wrestlers in just six weight classes, the under-staffed University of Wisconsin-Parkside wrestling squad was unable to retain the Sake Bottle Trophy on Thursday night, falling 44-9 to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater inside Kachel Gymnasium to lose possession of the trophy for just the sixth time since it was instituted in 1975.
The host Warhawks (18-3) staked an early 6-0 lead in the dual after earning a forfeit at 125 pounds.
Joseph Her equalized the score with a pin at 133-pounds, subduing Anthony Reyes in three minutes, 42 seconds. UW-Whitewater secured a 3-2 decision at 141 and a win by pin at 149 before
Zach Noel prevailed 10-6 at 157 pounds.
UW-Parkside conceded four of the next five weight classes as UWW tallied forfeit wins at 165, 174, 197 and 285 pounds to reclaim the Sake Bottle for the second time in three years and just the sixth time in 26 encounters.
The Sake Bottle Trophy orginated in 1975 when former UW-Parkside coach and hall of famer Jim Koch and UW-Whitewater coach Willie Myers toured Japan and Korea with an NAIA All-State Team. Mr. Hatta, the former president of Japanese wrestling and considered the father of the sport in Japan, presented the two coaches with a Sake Bottle. Since then the two southeastern Wisconsin schools have battled for posession of the traveling trophy.
The Rangers take the rest of the month off before returning to the mat on March 1 for the NCAA Division II Super Regional.
