SOMERS, Wis. (Nov. 16, 2014)-- The third-ranked and top-seeded University of Wisconsin-Parkside punched through to the Sweet 16 for the second time in three years on Sunday afternoon, vanquishing fifth-seeded Saginaw Valley State University 2-0 in an NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship second round match at snowy Wood Road Field.

The Rangers (18-0-3) return to the round of 16 for the fourth time in program history, also advancing to the Midwest Region Championship in 2008, 2010 and 2012. UW-Parkside will host second-seeded and 11th-ranked Grand Valley State University on Friday, Nov. 21 at Wood Road Field after the Lakers rolled Bellarmine University 2-0 on Sunday.

"We got the result we wanted," said 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year Troy Fabiano. "I give credit to Saginaw Valley they played extremely hard. They had a game plan and were looking to counter."

The two squads battled to a scoreless opening half with the host Rangers owning a 12-4 edge in shots, including a 4-3 advantage in shots on frame.

UW-Parkside finally broke through in the 53rd minute with Emily Konior scoring in mad scramble in front of the net off a corner kick. Kelsey Armour and Konior both rifled off shots before Konior beat the keeper for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Ashley Meyer added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute, netting her second score of the season while Armour tallied her second assist of the day.

"We were a little impatient in the first half; Saginaw was very difficult to break down. In the second half we were able to find some gaps and finish a couple opportunities we had."

Ranger netminder Mallory Geurts made four saves on the afternoon, collecting her record-setting 15th clean sheet of the season and the squad's 16th of the 2014 campaign. Both marks broke single season records, with Geurts edging Cassie Glodowski (2008) and Abbigale Wild (2004) for most individual shutouts while the team surpasses the program's previous best for shutouts set during the 2004 and 2008 campaigns.

The Cardinals' (11-4-3) Claire Spleth absorbed the loss, making nine saves in 90 minutes of work.

UW-Parkside ended the contest with a commanding 24-8 edge in shots, including 11 of the 15 shots fired on frame.
