(Oct. 29, 2014)-- The fourth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's soccer squad needed at least a tie to claim the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season title outright and did just that, securing a 0-0 overtime draw against Lewis University on Wednesday at Wood Road Field to hoist the league regular season crown for the first time since 2008.
The regular season crown is the Rangers' third under the direction of Head Coach
Troy Fabiano, claiming the GLVC regular season title in both 2004 and 2008. UW-Parkside (14-0-3, 12-0-3 GLVC) additionally caps off the regular season unbeaten for the first time since 2008 and is only the 10th GLVC squad in history to survive the conference slate without a loss.
With the title, UW-Parkside earns the No. 1 seed in the GLVC Tournament and will host the opening round on Sunday against eighth-seeded Lewis (5-6-6, 5-5-5 GLVC) and is positioned to host all subsequent rounds of the eight team event. The Rangers have won the GLVC Tournament on four separate occasions, most recently during the 2010 campaign.
The Rangers dominated the Flyers offensively, rifling off 21 of the 24 shots in the contest. Parkside looked to have the game winner in the waning moments of the first overtime but the referee determined the ball crossed the endline after time expired, forcing a second overtime. The match was finally called after 102 minutes of action due to darkness.
The Parkside defense kept Lewis at bay for most of the contest, with
Mallory Geurts needing to make just one save to notch the team's 13th clean sheet of the season. Flyer goalkeeper Mara Bennett netted six saves in the scoreless stalemate.
The rematch between Parkside and Lewis at Wood Road Field on Sunday to open the GLVC Tournament will get underway at noon.
