(Nov. 2, 2014)-- Lauren Bialas came off the bench and tallied the first goal of her career, opening the floodgates in the second half as the fourth-ranked and top-seeded University of Wisconsin-Parkside downed eighth-seeded Lewis University 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Quarterfinal match at Wood Road Field.
With the victory, the Rangers (15-0-3) will host the rest of the GLVC Tournament. UW-Parkside will host fourth-seeded Truman State University on Friday after the Bulldogs downed fifth-seeded Drury University 1-0 this afternoon. The other semifinal will feature seventh-seeded Missouri University S&T, surprise 2-0 victors over second-seeded Bellarmine University against sixth-seeded Quincy University after the Hawks tied third-seeded Rockhurst University 1-1 but advanced 5-4 on penalty kicks.
Despite owning a 7-4 advantage in shots and having several scoring opportunities, including a penalty kick, the Rangers were unable to penetrate the goalmouth in the opening 45 minutes of action, heading into the half tied at 0-0.
Bialas provided the necessary spark for the Rangers in the second stanza. After not seeing any action in the first half, the sophomore subbed in during the 62nd minute and scored just two minutes later, punching the ball past the keeper in the 64th minute in a mad scramble in front of the net.
Karley Mecko and
Ashley Meyer were both credited with assists on the score.
The Rangers doubled the lead in the 76th minute with
Jillian Hetfleisch weaving past the Flyer defense for goal number six on the season for the sophomore while Tyalor Schiffer-Jander capped off a 16-minute scoring binge with a goal in the 80th minute with Meyer netting her second assist of the contest. The goal was Schiffer-Jander's six of the 2014 campaign.
Goalkeeper
Mallory Geurts tallied four saves to pick up the clean sheet, the Rangers 14th of the season. Lewis (5-7-6) goaltender Mara Bennett had a busy afternoon, making nine saves while allowing three scores. UW-Parkside finished the contest with a 19-6 advantage in shots, including 12 of the 14 shots ripped off in the second half.
