(Oct. 17, 2014)-- In a battle of Great Lakes Valley Conference heavyweights, regionally-ranked Truman State University landed the first punch but it was the 12th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's soccer team that delivered the knockout blow, emerging from Wood Road Field with a 2-1 victory on Friday afternoon.
The visiting Bulldogs (10-3-1, 8-2-1 GLVC), ranked sixth in the most recent Midwest Region rankings, opened the scoring with Jessica Hanson finding the back of the net in the 12th minute. The goal snapped the Rangers' (11-0-2, 9-0-2 GLVC) scoreless streak at 290 minutes, a streak spanning five games. UW-Parkside equalized the score 10 minutes later with
Taylor Schiffer-Jander netting her fourth goal of the 2014 campaign with
Jillian Hetfleisch tallying the assist.
The two squads entered halftime deadlocked at 1-1 with Truman owning an 8-6 edge in shots, benefitting from a strong wind at its back in the opening 45 minutes of play.
Emily Konior emerged as the hero in the second half, converting a penalty kick in the 81st minute for what proved to be the decisive score. The goal was the senior's sixth of the year and her ninth career game-winner.
UW-Parkside ended the contest with a 15-12 advantage in shots including an 8-4 edge in shots on frame.
Mallory Geurts earned the win in goal for the Rangers, making three saves in 90 minutes of work while TSU's Katie Mattingly suffered the loss, making six saves and yielding two goals.
The victory extends Parkside's buffer atop the league table. The Rangers headed into the day with a tenuous 1/2-game lead in the standings and depending on the outcome of several night games will at worst hold a one game lead heading into Sunday's clash against GLVC rival Quincy University. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m.
