SOMERS, Wis. (Jan. 3, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball squad owned a double digit advantage in the second half but was unable to fend off a late charge by visiting Quincy University, suffering a 56-55 setback on Friday night in the Rangers' Great Lakes Valley Conference opener inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
A Maggie Cunningham three-pointer with 13 seconds left gave the 25th-ranked Hawks (9-1, 2-0 GLVC) their first lead of the second half at 56-55 in what turned out to be the final score of the night. The Rangers misfired on a shot with nine seconds left before putting Quincy on the line with one second left. The Hawks missed the free throw but the Rangers were unable to convert a final desperation shot at the buzzer.
UW-Parkside (4-5, 0-1 GLVC) tallied the opening 10 points of the game, including back-to-back three-pointers from
Maddie Johnston. QU fought, back with nine straight points to trail by just one point with 14:29 left in the opening stanza. Quincy briefly claimed the lead at 21-19 with eight minutes left as the lead changed hands four times in the opening half of action as the homestanding Rangers enjoyed a 36-31 buffer at the halftime intermission.
The Rangers scored 10 of the first 12 points in the second half, building a game-high 13-point advantage with 15:48 remaining but the Rangers tallied just nine points the rest of the way as Quincy ended the contest on a 23-9 run while claiming 18 of the final 23 points scored.
Four Rangers ended the night in double figures with
Danielle Slivka and
Gaby Bronson pacing the squad with 13 points apiece. Bronson additionally grabbed seven rebounds while distributing a game-high seven assists.
Tara Knapstein tallied 11 points and a team-high eight boards while
Maddie Johnston collected 11 points, canning three shots from beyond the arc.
Cunningham led Quincy with 12 points while Hannah Weedman added 11. Lucy Cramsey added 10 points while grabbing eight rebounds.
The Rangers shot 50 percent (15-for-30) from the field in the opening half but managed to shoot just 30.8 percent (eight-for-26) in the second half, ending the night shooting 41.1 percent. UW-Parkside forced 17 QU turnovers and held a 17-8 edge in points off turnovers.
The Rangers return to the court on Sunday afternoon, hosting Truman State University for the first time ever. UW-Parkside and the Bulldogs are slated to tipoff at 1 p.m. inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
