SOMERS, Wis. (Jan. 25, 2014)-- A season-high 20 points from
Tara Knapstein was not enough as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball team fell 58-45 to the University of Southern Indiana in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match-up on Saturday inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
The Screaming Eagles (12-5, 6-3 GLVC) dominated down low, owning a 50-32 rebounding advantage while owning a 22-1 edge in second chance points.
USI raced to an early 7-3 advantage just over three minutes into the game but the Rangers (6-11, 2-7 GLVC) responded with eight of the next 11 to secure an 11-10 lead with 12:18 left.
Maddie Johnston capped off the run, burying a three to give the home side its first lead of the afternoon. The Eagles quickly reclaimed the lead and owned a five point edge midway through the opening half.
UW-Parkside fought back, tying the game at 18 with 7:51 left off a
Gaby Bronson three-pointer. Another three by Bronson gave the Rangers the 21-20 lead in what turned out to be the squad's final lead of the day. Southern Indiana quickly reclaimed the lead and owned a 29-27 edge at the break.
Bronson tied the game at 29 early in the second half before USI pulled away, extending its advantage to double digits with 7:56 left en route to the 13-point win.
Knapstein hit four of the Rangers' nine treys on the afternoon, posting a game-high 20 points while adding six boards. Bronson added 13 while grabbing six rebounds while Johnston chipped in six points.
Anna Hackert paced Southern Indiana with 16 points and 17 rebounds while Mary O'Keefe and Stephanie Carpenter added 14 and 12 points, respectively.
UW-Parkside sunk seven threes in the opening 20 minutes of play, but struggled from the floor in the second half, shooting just 21.7 percent (five-for-23), finishing the contest shooting 29.8 percent (14-for-47).
The Rangers return to the hardwood on Thursday night, hitting the road to face Saint Joseph's College at 5:30 p.m.
