Rangers Foil #25 Flyers, 51-50

SOMERS, Wis. (Jan. 20, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball team unseated its first nationally-ranked opponent of the season on Monday night, slipping past #25 Lewis University in a back-and-forth Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division battle inside DeSimone Gymnasium.

The Rangers (6-9, 2-5 GLVC) tallied their second straight victory in a back and forth affair featuring 14 lead changes and six ties. UW-Parkside took the lead for good with 39 seconds left after Danielle Slivka hit a jumper. Sarah Mlachnik blocked a Flyer shot the next possession before getting sent to the free throw line. Mlachnik drained both shots to extend the UW-Parkside advantage to three before the Flyers' Jess Reinhart converted a layup with five seconds left.

The Rangers successful inbounded the ball and was quickly fouled with three seconds left. Parkside misfired on the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Flyers one last chance with 2.6 seconds left. UW-Parkside prevented Lewis (12-3, 6-1 GLVC) from unleashing a shot in the waning moments to secure the one-point win and send the Flyers' their first defeat of the conference slate.

Neither squad led by more than four points in the opening half with two teams heading into the halftime intermission deadlocked at 25.

Lewis led 29-28 with 18:07 left in the game before the Rangers netted 11 of the next 13 points, enjoying a game-high eight-point advantage with 14:01 left in the game. UW-Parkside's lead eventually evaporated with the Flyers' tying the game at 40 off a Alyssa Dengler three with just under nine minutes to play. Parkside led 47-44 with 4:34 left but the Flyers chipped away, claiming a one-point lead with 1:13 left before Slivka answered with a jumper the next possession to put the home side back on top for good with 39 seconds left.

Slivka paced all scorers with 19 points while Mlachnik and Tara Knapstein added nine and seven points, respectively. Mlachnik tallied a pair of blocks, including a pivotal swat with 11 seconds left. Gaby Bronson secured a team-best seven rebounds while offering up five points on the offensive end.

Reinhart led Lewis with 15 points while Mariyah Henley scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Rangers host Bellarmine University on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
