SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Jan. 16, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside was unable to weather a late University of Illinois Springfield rally, stumbling 60-57 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division showdown inside the UIS Recreation & Athletic Center.
Rani Singh canned a three with 8:21 left in the game as the visiting Rangers (4-9, 0-5 GLVC) owned a seven-point buffer. The Prairie Stars answered with nine in a row to secure a 53-51 advantage with 2:38 left. UW-Parkside tied the game at 56 with 1:22 left after
Gaby Bronson hit a pair of free throws but the Rangers scored just one point the rest of the way as an Alyssa Palmer layup with 24 ticks left and a pair of free throws with eight seconds left sealed the four-point decision for the homestanding Prairie Stars.
Illinois Springfield grabbed an early lead and built a 10-point buffer with 3:13 left in the opening half after Palmer drained a three. UW-Parkside trailed 32-24 at the break but whittled the gap to just a point after beginning the second stanza on a 14-7 run. Back-to-back layups from
Danielle Slivka tied the game at 44 with 11:04 left, part of a 13-0 Ranger run to build a 51-44 advantage with 8:21 left.
Bronson and Slivka led the Rangers, each scoring 13 points.
Sarah Mlachnik chipped in eight points with
Tara Knapstein and
Bailey North adding seven and six points, respectively.
Palmer led UIS, scoring a game-high 19 points while Elizabeth Kelly posted 13 points and 10 rebounds.
UW-Parkside shot 42.3 percent (22-for-52) in a game that featured five ties and four lead changes.
The Rangers return to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Lebanon, Ill., to face McKendree University at 1 p.m.
