LAKELAND, Fla. (Sept. 7, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball squad was unable to replicate the success of day one at the Florida Southern College/Terrace Hotel Classic, suffering a pair of 3-0 setbacks on Saturday inside Jenkins Field House. The Rangers fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 26-24) to second-ranked University of Tampa to begin the day before stumbling 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-15) to host Florida Southern.
The second-ranked Spartans (3-0) led wire-to-wire in both the opening two sets, winning 25-16 and 25-14. The Rangers (2-2) trailed early in the third set before securing a 6-4 advantage with four straight points. UW-P led again at 11-10 and the contest was tied at 12 before Tampa rattled off five straight points. The Rangers closed the gap to one at 21-20 and tied the game at 23 and again at 24 before a Kim Amerell kill and a Ranger attack error ended the set in favor of the Spartans, securing the match.
Bridget Nickel paced the Rangers with 11 kills with
Lisa Gregerson chipping in 10.
Lauren Hickson tallied 26 assists and eight dis with
Sarah Mlachnik contributing a team-high 17 digs.
Against the host Moccasins, UW-P led 14-12 in the opening set before yielding 13 of the next 15 points, falling 25-16. FSC never trailed in the second set. UW-Parkside chipped into the lead and pulled to within three at 21-18 before the Mocs claimed four of the next five points to secure the 25-19 decision in set two. FSC rolled 25-15 in the third set to secure the sweep.
Nickel once again led the attack with nine kills while also collecting nine digs and a pair of blocks. The senior finished with 46 kills in three matches over the two-day classic, earning a spot on the six player All-Tournament team. Hickson amassed 27 assists and 14 digs while Mlachnik accrued 17 digs.
The Rangers return to the court on Friday, hosting the seven-team UW-Parkside Tournament inside DeSimone Gymnasium. Action begins at noon with the Rangers hitting the floor at 2 p.m. against Wayne State University and again at 6:30 p.m. against Gannon University.
