Volleyball Prevails 3-1 in GLVC Opener

SOMERS, Wis. (Sept. 21, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball squad lifted the lid on its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon, downing visiting Quincy University 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21) inside DeSimone Gymnasium.

The Rangers (7-3, 1-0 GLVC) trailed early in the opening set with the visiting Hawks (4-5, 0-1 GLVC) claiming four of the opening five points. UW-Parkside stormed back, eventually building a 17-10 edge. QU attempted a late charge with four straight points before a Lisa Gregerson kill and a Hawk attack error ended set one 25-18 in favor of the home squad.

UW-P tallied the opening four points of set two and enjoyed a 18-14 buffer forcing a QU timeout. Quincy came out of the timeout with six straight points to seize the lead and 11 of the final 13 points to steal the second set with a 25-20 win.

Quincy opened set three with an 8-4 edge before the Rangers tied the set at 14 courtesy of a Lauren Hickson service ace. The Hawks briefly regained the lead, holding a 20-19 edge before the Rangers closed the set by claiming four of the final six points including a kill by Makenzie Fahnestock to secure the set 25-22.

UW-Parkside secured the match victory in the fourth set with a Rebecca Roembke kill ending the set 25-21 in favor of the Rangers.

Fahnestock led the Rangers with 14 kills while Roembke added 11. Hickson tallied 38 assists while defensively, Sarah Mlachnik tallied a team-best 23 digs.

Samantha Haegele tallied 15 kills for Quincy with Renee Beranek finishing with 20 assists and Sommer Holder claiming a game-high 20 digs.

The Rangers, winners of five of their last six, look to stay hot on Sunday, facing nationally-ranked Truman State University at 1 p.m. inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
