Volleyball Finishes Home Tourney 3-1

SOMERS, Wis. (Sept. 14, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball squad split a pair of matches on Saturday to close out its own tournament at DeSimone Gymnasium, falling 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-23) to second-ranked University of Minnesota-Duluth before rebounding with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-20) victory over Upper Iowa University.

In the opening match of the day, the Bulldogs (7-0) never trailed, securing the three set sweep. In the first set a Bulldog service error and a Sarah Mlachnik ace tied the contest at 10 but UMD pulled away, claiming 10 of the next 14 points en route to the 25-17 set win. UMD led wire-to-wire in set two, posting a 25-12 victory and staked an early 12-5 advantage in the third set.

UW-Parkside (5-3) capitalized on a slew of UMD errors to climb back into the contest, pulling within two at 13-11, forcing a Bulldog timeout. Minnesota-Duluth gained some separation and held a 23-18 lead before four straight points pulled the homestanding Rangers within a point of tying. A pair of errors solidified the set in favor of UMD, giving the nationally-ranked squad the 3-0 match victory.

Makenzie Fahnestock powered the attack for UW-P with seven kills. Ryann Arundel collected nine assists while Mlachnik generated 14 digs to lead the way.

Against the Upper Iowa (, UW-P roared out to a 14-3 lead in the opening set before Peacocks fought back, chipping into the Ranger lead and pulling with two at 21-19. UIU stayed close in the waning moments of set one, tallying a point to cut the UW-P advantage to 24-22 before a Rebecca Roembke kill ended the set in favor of the home side.

10 consecutive points in set two gave the Rangers a 15-4 en route to a 25-17 victory before finishing off UIU with a 25-20 win in set three to secure the three-set match victory.

Roembke led the Rangers with 10 kills with Kendyl Danelski adding seven. Lauren Hickson served up 12 assists while Sarah Mlachnik accrued 19 digs.

UW-Parkside finished its own tournament with a 3-1 mark after earning 3-0 victories over Wayne State University and Gannon University on Friday.

The Rangers return to the court on Tuesday, hosting Northern Michigan University at 5:30 p.m.
