SOMERS, Wis. (Sept. 13, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside rolled past a pair of opponents by identical 3-0 counts on Friday to open up the UW-Parkside Tournament inside DeSimone Gymnasium. The Rangers toppled Wayne State University 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-15) in the opening match of the day before downing Gannon University 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-22) to cap off the day.

Against Wayne State (3-2), the Warriors staked an 8-4 lead in the opening set before the Rangers (4-2) stormed back, tying the set at nine apiece. WSU led 12-10 but UW-Parkside closed the set on a 15-4 run to secure the win. A similar plotline unfolded in set two with the Warriors grabbing a 12-7 advantage. UW-P slowly closed the gap, tying the set at 16 and again at 17 before collecting four kills and a service ace to close the set on an 8-2 run.

In the third set, Cayla Flood surged into the record books, serving up four straight aces as the Rangers claimed a 5-0 lead and never looked back, securing the 25-15 to secure the match. Flood entered the day needing just one ace to set the UW-Parkside all-time record, surpassing Kari Good's mark of 112. By the end of the night, the setter had 116, also tallying an ace in the late game against Gannon.

Bridget Nickel led the attack with eight kills. Makenzie Fahnestock and Lisa Gregerson each added seven while Flood accounted for four of the seven service aces in the match. Lauren Hickson collected 26 assists while on the defensive end, Sarah Mlachnik led the way with 13 digs.

Against Gannon, neither side was able to pull away in the opening set as timely kills late in the set by Fahnestock and Kendyl Danelski allowed the homestanding Rangers to escape with the 25-23 decision. Six of the first seven points in set two opened the floodgates for UW-P, cruising to the 25-14 set win. The Rangers never trailed in the third set and survived a late charge by the Golden Knights as a Hickson kill and a Mlachnik ace ended the set 25-22, giving UW-Parkside the match win.

Fahnestock carried the load offensively with 14 kills with Nickel adding nine. Hickson collected 36 assists while Mlachnik finished with 12 digs.

The Rangers return to the court at 12 p.m. on Saturday, facing second-ranked University of Minnesota-Duluth and finish off the tournament at 5 p.m. against Upper Iowa University.
