SOMERS, Wis. (Apr. 27, 2013)-- Alexis Simone blasted three home runs and drove in seven runs, helping the University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball squad secure a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over Saint Joseph's College on Saturday at the Case Softball Complex.
Colleen Cummings tallied a walk-off double to win game one 6-5 before the Rangers secured the sweep with a victory by an identical score in the nightcap.
The Rangers (11-33, 8-22 GLVC) opened the scoring early in game one, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Ashley Nowdomski hit a one out double before Simone cleared the bases with a home run blast over the right field fence.
The Pumas (25-16, 13-16 GLVC) grabbed the led in the top of the second with Morgan Moseley belting a three-run home run. UW-Parkside tied the contest in the third with a
Kirsten Luevano single scoring Nowdomski who led off the frame with a double to left field.
SJC once again surged in front with Tiffany Gibson hitting a two-run home run in the fifth, giving the visitors the 5-3 edge.
Nowdomski led off the seventh inning with an infield single before Simone went yard for the second time in the game to tie the score at 5. Cummings emerged as the hero, coming to bat with two outs. The junior was given a second chance after the Puma's catcher dropped a foul ball for what would have been the third out. Cummings made SJC pay for the mistake, belting a double to left center field to score
Kelynn Sporer, who reached base with a single down the left field line.
Four Rangers finished game one with multiple hits with
Ashley Nowdomski leading the way, finishing a perfect four-for-four while scoring three times. Luevano was three-for-four at the plate while Simone was two-for-three with four RBIs and Cummings was two-for-four.
Hayley Schneider earned the win in the circle, tossing 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit. St. Joseph's Jessica Cates suffered the loss, allowing five hits and three runs in 2 1/3 innings of action.
The visiting Pumas staked an early lead in game two, scoring a run in the first inning before Stephanie Winter hit a two-run home run in the second for the 3-0 lead.
UW-Parkside answered in the third inning as Simone tied the contest with her third home run of the day. The freshman's team-leading 10th home run of the season cleared the left center field fence and scored
Lexi Sotiros and Nowdomski. Sotiros reached base courtesy of an error while Nowdomski safely reached base on a base hit.
The Rangers added two more runs in the fourth with Cummings scoring from first on an error while a Sotiros sacrfice fly scored
Katie Neubauer.
SJC leveled the score at 5-5 in the sixth inning with Gibson collecting her second home run of the afternoon.
UW-Parkside pushed across the eventual game-winner in the sixth inning with
Kira Cooper reaching base with two outs courtesy of a Puma throwing error, allowing
Jessica Norton to score.
Nowdomski finished game two three-for-four at the plate while Norton was two-for-three.
Schneider earned her second victory of the day, handling the final two innings and striking out one while allowing just two hits. SJC's Megan Ramey was saddled with the defeat, allowing 10 hits and six runs in 5 1/3 innings of action.
The Rangers close out the season on Sunday, hosting top-ranked University of Indianapolis in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
