SOMERS, Wis. (Apr. 25, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball squad battled Lewis University for the second straight day on Thursday as the Rangers secured a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader split at the Case Softball Complex. UW-Parkside rallied to a 4-3 win in the opener before faltering 9-3 in the nightcap.
Lewis (24-12, 18-6 GLVC) struck first in the game one, pushing across single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to build a 3-0 advantage. UW-Parkside (9-33, 6-22 GLVC) responded in the bottom of the fifth, manufacturing three runs to tie the contest.
Brittany Rynish and
Kelynn Sporer plated the first two runs, both coming home on a Flyer throwing error. Rynish pinch ran for
Alexis Simone who led off the inning with a single to left field while Sporer came home after drawing a walk.
Colleen Cummings tied the game with two-outs, scoring on a wild pitch after reaching base on a bunt single.
The Rangers tallied the go-ahead score the next frame with Sporer scoring with two outs on an infield single by
Jessica Norton. Sporer reached base after belting a double down the right field line.
The Flyers threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with one out but the Ranger defense stepped up as Cummings and Simone turned a double play to end the game.
Sporer went the distance in the circle, striking out four while allowing two earned runs in seven innings of action. The sophomore helped her cause on the offensive end, going one-for-two at the plate while scoring twice. Lewis' Kelly Bowler was saddled with the loss, allowing four hits and four runs in the six-inning effort.
A six run outburst in the second inning proved to be the difference maker as the Flyers secured game two with a 9-3 victory.
After a scoreless first frame, the Lewis offense came alive, pounding out six hits and scoring six runs in the second inning. Lauren Hanford tripled in a pair of scores while an Alexis Funk double plated two more.
UW-Parkside got on the board in the fourth with
Kirsten Luevano belting a leadoff single before Simone cleared the bases with her team-leading seventh home run of the season.
Lewis tacked on three more in the fifth inning while UW-P concluded the scoring in the bottom of the fifth with Simone blasting a two-out double to score
Kira Cooper.
Kristin Kleinmeyer was hit with the loss, yielding six runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Hayley Schneider handled the final 5 2/3 innings, allowing just three runs. Ali Brems earned the win for Lewis, tossing a complete game and striking out eight.
The Rangers return to action on Saturday, hosting Saint Joseph's College in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
