ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (Apr. 24, 2013)-- Offense was in short supply for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team on Wednesday, dropping a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference games against host Lewis University. The Rangers fell 6-0 in the opener before a late rally ended prematurely in the nightcap, stumbling 4-2.
In game one, the game was a scoreless deadlock until the bottom of the fourth inning as the Flyers belted back-to-back doubles to get on the board. Lewis doubled its advantage later in the frame while tacking on three more runs in the fifth courtesy of a home run by Lauren Hanford. A Ranger error in the sixth brought in the Flyers sixth and final score of the game.
Kelly Bowler shined for the Flyers in the circle, striking out 10 in the complete-game one-hitter while issuing just one walk. UW-Parkside's
Katie Neubauer absorbed the defeat, allowing two earned runs and striking out three in 4 2/3 innings of action.
Hanford continued to be a thorn in the Rangers side in game two, belting another three-run home run in the nightcap, giving the Flyers the 3-0 lead after one inning of play. Hanford later laid down a sacrifice bunt in the fifth to plate Lewis' fourth score of the game.
UW-Parkside attempted a late rally in the top of the seventh inning. Neubauer drew a walk before
Kelynn Sporer crushed a two-out home run over the left field fence, cutting the deficit in half. The Flyers responded by inducing a groundout the next at-bat to stymie the rally and end the game.
Kristin Kleinmeyer suffered the complete game loss, yielding four runs while striking out one. The Flyers' Ali Brems claimed the victory in the circle, striking out six and allowing just three hits in seven innings of work.
The two squads meet again on Thursday in a GLVC twinbill at the Case Softball Complex. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
