EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Apr. 21, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team owned leads in both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division doubleheader on Sunday but was unable to finish off host University of Southern Indiana, falling 3-2 and 10-3 at the USI Softball Field.
The Rangers (8-30, 5-19 GLVC) grabbed an early lead in the opener before the host Screaming Eagles (24-17, 12-14 GLVC) mounted a late game rally to nip UW-Parkside 3-2.
UW-P opened the scoring in the second inning.
Kelynn Sporer led off the inning by drawing a walk, eventually scoring on a passed ball while
Lexi Sotiros doubled the score with a single through the right side to score
Katie Neubauer, for the 2-0 lead.
Southern Indiana broke up the shutout in the top of the third, scoring a run on an RBI double. USI loaded the bases in the sixth inning before the Rangers neutralized the threat, inducing a lineout to escape the inning.
UW-Parkside wasn't so fortunate in the seventh inning with a fielding error with two outs allowing a pair of runs to score, giving the hosts the 3-2 lead in what turned out to be the final runs of the game.
Neubauer and
Kira Cooper powered the Ranger offense, each collecting a pair of hits in the opener.
In the circle, Neubauer suffered the loss, allowing just one earned run and striking out two in the complete game effort. USI's Brooke Harmening earned the win, striking out five and allowing two earned runs in seven innings of action.
In the nightcap, the Eagles opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning but the Rangers answered in the bottom half of the inning, grabbing the lead thanks to a three-run outburst.
Sotiros sparked the scoring surge, belting a one-out single. A Nowdomski double plated Sotiros before a
Kirsten Luevano double scored two runs, giving UW-P the 3-2 edge.
Four hits, one walk, two hit batters and a home run turned into six runs for the Screaming Eagles in the fourth inning, reclaiming the lead. USI added two more runs in the fifth for the final 10-3 tally.
Alexis Simone and Cooper both finished two-for-four at the plate to lead the Ranger offense in game two.
Kristin Kleinmeyer absorbed the loss, allowing eight runs in 3 2/3 innings of action. USI's Sarah Owens was credited with the complete game victory, striking out three and allowing three earned runs.
The Rangers return to the diamond on Wednesday, making the short trek to Romeoville, Ill. For a doubleheader against Lewis University.
