ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (Apr. 2, 2013)-- Despite early leads in both games the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball squad could not keep pace with host Lewis University, falling 14-6 and 9-2 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference twinbill on a brisk Tuesday afternoon at Brennan Field.
The Rangers (0-10, 0-12 GLVC) grabbed an early lead in game one, pushing across a pair of scores in the top of the first inning.
Zach Cunningham got things going with a one-out single. A
Taylor Nehls double advanced Cunningham to third before the second basemen scored on a balk. Nehls came home for the frame's second run courtesy of a
John Perszyk sacrifice fly to right field.
Lewis (16-3, 10-1 GLVC) quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on four walks to plate two runs before grabbing the lead in the bottom of the second off a Jake Murray solo home run to claim a 3-2 edge.
UW-Parkside tied the game in the third before reclaiming the lead in the top of the fourth. A
Derek Tuttle single brought home Nehls in the third before
Ben Korman scored in the fourth off a
Andrew Mott flyout, giving the Rangers the 4-3 lead.
Lewis responded with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings. A
Chris Glynn single in the sixth plated Tuttle but the Flyers piled on four runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth to secure the 14-6 win in an offensive slugfest featuring 22 hits.
Glynn, Nehls and Tuttle all collected a pair of hits with Nehls stealing a pair of bases and scoring two runs.
Andrew Mott drove in two runs for the Rangers who finished the opener with 10 hits.
Andy Stochl was saddled with the loss, yielding four earned runs and striking out three in four innings of work. Nick Davito claimed the win for the Flyers, tossing the opening five innings and striking out four while allowing four earned runs.
Game two unfolded in a similar fashion as the opener, with the visiting Rangers grabbing an early lead before the Flyers surged to the win.
Eric DuCharme led off the nightcap with a double, later scoring on a Tuttle sacrifice fly. Lewis quickly answered in the bottom of the first with Ben Albano blasting a two-run home run. A sacrifice fly in the third, pushed the Flyer edge to 3-1 before taking on three runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to stake a 9-1 advantage.
Mott belted a one out double in the top of the seventh, later scoring on a DuCharme sacrifice fly before the Flyers induced a groundout the next at bat to finish the contest and complete the sweep.
DuCharme and Mott each finished two-for-three at the dish while
Casey Doucette suffered the loss on the mound, pitching the opening five innings and allowing five earned runs. Kendall Paluch earned the win for host Lewis, striking out five and allowing just one run in six innings of work.
The Rangers return to the diamond on Saturday, opening up a four-game series in Lebanon, Ill., against McKendree University. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
