LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Apr. 14, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball squad dropped both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference twinbill on Sunday, falling 8-5 and 6-3 to host Bellarmine University.
The Rangers (7-24, 4-15 GLVC) outhit the host Knights (24-18, 16-9 GLVC) in the opener but were undone after allowing five runs in the first inning.
A bases loaded walk tallied the game's opening tally before Scarlett Powers belted a grand slam for an early 5-0 lead for BU.
Kellyn Sporer put the Rangers on the board in the second with an RBI double to score
Alexis Simone. The Knights expanded their lead in the bottom of the frame, plating a pair of runs for the 7-1 edge.
Katie Neubauer closed the gap to 7-4 with a three-run home run in the fourth while a
Kirsten Luevano walk brought in Kristen Kleinmeyer in the fifth. Bellarmine tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to conclude the scoring.
UW-Parkside outhit Bellarmine 10-9 with
Ashley Nowdomski and Neubauer collecting a pair of hits.
Sporer absorbed the loss in the circle, yielding seven runs in 1 2/3 innings of action before Kleinmeyer entered in relief, tossing the final 4 1/3 and striking out five while allowing no earned runs.
In game two, the Knights staked a 4-0 lead and held off the Rangers to secure the sweep.
BU pushed across a run in the first before adding three in the bottom of the fourth inning. UWP responded with three runs in the top of the fifth with Nowdomski plating
Jessica Loy while Luevano belted a two-RBI single, closing the gap to just one run.
Bellarmine answered with a pair of scores in the fifth and held on for the 6-3 win.
Kira Cooper paced the Rangers in the nightcap, finishing three-for-four at the plate.
Neubauer was saddled with the loss, allowing three earned runs in 3 1/3 innings of action while Alicia Miller picked up the complete game win for the Knights.
The Rangers return to the diamond on Tuesday, facing Saint Xavier University in a non-conference doubleheader.
