ALLENDALE, Mich. (Mar. 27, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball squad held leads in both games but was unable to withstand a series of late charges by host and 15th-ranked Grand Valley State University, dropping both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at the GVSU Softball Field. The Rangers fell 4-3 in the opener before stumbling 16-1 in the nightcap on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lakers (16-2) squeaked past the Rangers (5-14) in the opener, surviving UW-Parkside's second inning scoring surge. GVSU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on a pair of Ranger errors to tally two unearned runs.
Visiting UW-Parkside answered in the top of the second, capturing the lead with a three-run outburst.
Lani Grogan opened the frame with a single, eventually scoring on a Laker fielding miscue. Pitcher
Katie Neubauer helped her cause at the plate, belting a two-out single to left center field, scoring
Colleen Cummings and
Ashley Nowdomski. Commings reached base on the fielding error while Nowdomski got on base by drawing a walk as UWP grabbed the 3-2 advantage.
A two out RBI single by Nellie Kosola knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth before GVSU pushed across the eventual game winner in the bottom of the fifth with Kayleigh Bertram belting a two-out double, plating the Lakers' third unearned run of the contest.
Neubauer paced the Rangers' offensive, collecting two of the team's four hits. In the circle the freshman righthander was saddled with the loss, striking out four while yielding just one earned run in the complete game effort. GVSU's Hannah Santora earned the win, fanning six batters and allowing no earned runs in seven innings of work.
In game two, the Rangers opened the scoring in the top of the fourth with
Kirsten Luevano belting a two-out RBI single to right center field, bringing home Neubauer who reached base with a single of her own for the 1-0 lead.
UW-Parkside imploded in the bottom of the frame, committing five errors as the home side pounded out 10 hits and scored 16 runs to grab the lead and enact the mercy rule, ending the contest after five innings.
Cummings led the Rangers offensively, finishing two-for-two at the plate with a walk.
The Rangers return to the diamond on Friday, facing the University of Indianapolis in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
