ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (Feb. 28, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball team saw its five game win streak come to a close on Thursday afternoon, closing the regular season with a 64-60 setback to Lewis University in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division slugfest inside Neil Carey Arena.
The Rangers (18-8, 12-6 GLVC) were unable to find a rhythm of the offensive end of the court, finishing the game shooting just 35.5 percent (22-for-62) while converting just 52.4 percent (11-for-21) from the charity stripe.
Despite its struggles, UW-Parkside led 43-42 with 9:27 remaining off a three from
Jenna Endisch. The lead proved fleeting for the Rangers with the Flyers (21-5, 14-4 GLVC) answering on the ensuing possession as Sam Rinehart drained a three to reclaim the lead. Lewis' lead mushroomed to eight points with 4:21 left before the Rangers began to chip away, pulling within three points with just under two minutes to go off a
Danielle Slivka layup. Lewis bumped its edge to six points with 34 ticks remaining. Buckets from
Sierra West and Slivka cut the gap to just two with 10 seconds left before Sam Rinehart sealed the game for the home side with a pair of free throws, earning a share of the GLVC East Division crown with Kentucky Wesleyan College.
Lewis never trailed in the opening half, enjoying a 29-23 lead at intermission. A
Gaby Bronson layup with 15 minutes remaining pulled the Rangers within a point at 7-6. The Flyers responded over the next three minutes, accruing the next eight points of the game to secure a 15-6 lead with 11:52 remaining in the half. The hosts continued to pull away, increasing the buffer to 10 points with 3:50 left off a pair of free throws before taking the six-point edge into the locker room at the break.
The homestanding Flyers extended their edge to eight points early in the second stanza before the visitors tallied six in a row to pull within a possession. Lewis quickly upped its lead back to six with 16:32 left before the Rangers rolled off eight a row to secure their first lead of the night at 37-35 off a layup from
Tara Knapstein.
Slivka paced the Rangers with her fourth double-double of the year, dropping a season-high 20 points along with 10 rebounds. West drained three three-pointers, ending the night with 15 points, five assists and three steals while Knapstein added eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds and four steals.
Jess Reinhart led the Flyers with 16 points and nine boards. Labrenthia Murdock chipped in 12 points with Rinehart adding 11.
The Rangers return to the floor on Sunday, hosting Drury University in the opening round of the Deaconess GLVC Tournament. UWP dropped Drury 70-66 on Jan. 5 in Missouri. Tipoff inside DeSimone Gymnasium is slated for 1 p.m.
