MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Feb. 24, 2013)-- A strong defensive effort was not enough for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball squad on Sunday inside the Metrodome, falling 5-0 and 1-0 to 2011 NCAA Division II runner-up Winona State to open its 2013 campaign.

In the opener, the Rangers (0-2) and Warriors (3-3) were scoreless until the top of the sixth when an untimely UW-Parkside error allowed an unearned run to cross the plate, giving WSU the 1-0 lead. Winona State added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

Mike Wasilik was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, before scoring off a Derek Wojcik double. A single brought in Wojcik before Jordan Plamann belted a double to score a pair and push the Warrior advantage to 5-0. After yielding a leadoff walk to Chris Glynn to begin the bottom of the seventh, Winona State retired the next three batters to hold on for the win in the seven-inning contest.

Cole Kroncke tossed the final 2 1/3 innings for the Rangers and suffered the loss, striking out two and yielding four earned runs in relief of Josh Geiger who tossed 4 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just three hits and fanning two batters. Winona starter Brandon Verthein was credited with the win, tossing the opening five innings and allowing three hits and striking out six.

One run was all that was need in the nightcap for the Warriors to emerge from the temperature controlled dome with a doubleheader sweep.

Shane Hayes closed out the contest, retiring the lone batter he faced with a by inducing a groundout  Chase Blazier, Wasilik, Mark Ash and Dan Lohff collaborated for the shutout on the mound for Winona, allowing just three hits and striking out six.
