INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Feb. 23, 2013)-- The No. 13 University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball team saw its nine-game win streak come to a halt on Saturday inside Nicoson Hall as the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division champions let a nine-point lead slip away in the final three minutes of play, falling 72-70 to host University of Indianapolis.
The Rangers (19-6, 14-3 GLVC) trailed by as many as 13 points before building a nine-point cushion with 3:15 remaining off a
Conrad Krutwig layup. UW-Parkside mustered just two points the rest of the way as the Greyhounds (18-7, 10-7 GLVC) finished the contest on a 13-2 run to steal the win and snap the Rangers' nine-game win streak.
A pair of Tyrae Robinson free throws with 3:04 left chipped the UWP lead to just seven before pulling within a point just over a minute later after back-to-back threes from Reece Cheatham. A
Jeremy Saffold jumper with 1:35 left increased the Ranger lead back to three in what turned out to be the final points of the game for the visitors.
Robinson converted a layup with 68 seconds left to pull within a point before a foul with 28 seconds sent Robinson to the free throw line. The guard hit both and picked up a steal on the next Ranger possession, going back to the line with eight seconds left. He hit the first and missed the second, giving UW-Parkside one final chance for the win or tie to force overtime. UWP was unable to get a shot off as a steal by Brennan McElroy with three seconds left sealed the game for the home side.
UIndy enjoyed a 38-29 lead at the halftime break. The Rangers held an early 4-2 lead before the Greyhounds tallied 13 of the next 16 to take an eight-point lead with 12:41 remaining in the opening half. UIndy used a 7-0 run to extend their advantage to a game-high 13 points with 10:34 left before the Rangers answered with 10 consecutive points to pull within three.
A
Colt Grandstaff three-pointer instigated the run with a
Zygimantas Riauka layup capping the run, closing the gap to 24-21 with 7:05 remaining. UIndy collected the final six points of the half, enjoying a nine-point advantage at the break.
The Hounds extended their buffer back up to 13 points with 18:15 left in the second half before the Rangers outscored the hosts by a 35-13 margin to grab the 66-57 lead with 5:01 left in the game.
Saffold led all scorers with 22 points, shooting nine-for-17 from the floor while adding six rebounds. Krutwig added 14 points while
Andy Mazurczak chipped in 10 points while grabbing five boards.
Robinson led the host Hounds with 21 points while Cheatham and Daniel Daudu added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Brennan McElroy had a game-high 10 rebounds.
