SOMERS, Wis. (Nov. 3, 2013)-- Unable to sustain an early lead, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball team saw its five-match win streak come to a halt on Sunday, falling 3-1 (17-25, 26-24, 25-22, 25-21) to Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division co-leader Rockhurst University on Senior Day inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
The Rangers (16-10, 6-7 GLVC) staked an early lead after winning the opening set 25-17.
Jeni Heller tallied four kills as UW-Parkside roared out to a 5-0 advantage. The Rangers never looked back, leading wire-to-wire in set one. The Hawks (21-5, 11-2 GLVC) claimed the second set 26-24. Rockhurst led 23-20 before the Rangers got three straight kills from
Lisa Gregerson to tie the match. A Rockhurst attack error gave the home side the 24-23 edge before the Hawks tallied three straight points to escape with the 26-24 win. The Hawks won the fourth set 25-22 while collecting five of the final six points in the fourth set to earn a 25-21 win to claim the match.
Three Rangers ended the day with double-digit kill tallies, with
Makenzie Fahnestock leading the way with 15. Gregerson added 12 while Heller chipped in 11.
Chelsea Neave led the Rangers in assists, matching a career-high with 34 in her final home match while also tallying 13 digs.
Lauren Hickson added 24 assists while
Sarah Mlachnik led the way on defense with 24 digs.
Sunday's match was senior day as
Cayla Flood,
Sarah Mlachnik,
Chelsea Neave and
Bridget Nickel were all honored in a pregame ceremony. This year's seniors posted a record of 71-47 over the past four seasons, making two trips to the GLVC Tournament. Flood owns the school record in service aces with 121 in her career while Mlachnik ranks ninth all-time in digs (309) and Nickel ranks fifth in kills (866) and eighth in blocks (159).
The Rangers close out their conference slate with five straight road games, beginning on Friday with a 5 p.m. showdown in Springfield, Mo., against Drury University.
