SOMERS, Wis. (Nov. 2, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball squad extend its win streak to five on Saturday evening, winning the final three sets en route to a 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-20) victory against William Jewell College in a Great Lakes Valley Conference clash inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
The Rangers (16-9, 6-6 GLVC) tallied the opening three points of the match before the visiting Cardinals utilized a 15-2 run to claim the lead and go on to the 25-18 set one victory. William Jewell (4-22, 2-10 GLVC) tallied the opening point of the second set before UW-Parkside stormed back with eight straight points, including three kills from
Bridget Nickel. WJC crawled to within a point at 20-29 before the Rangers finished off the set with five of the next six points to level the match at one apiece.
The third set was a nip and tuck affair with neither squad leading by more than four points. WJC owned an early 11-7 lead but the Rangers quickly nullified the advantage, tying the game at 11. Neither squad could pull away until the Rangers, leading 21-19, collected four of the final six points to earn the 25-21 win.
UW-P trailed 14-12 in the fourth set before using a 12-5 run to secure a 24-19 lead and force match point. A service error pulled the Cardinals to within four before Jewell returned the favor with a service miscue of their own to seal the set and match in favor of the home side.
Lauren Hickson had a career-high 16 kills to pace the Rangers while also collecting a match-high 26 assists.
Jeni Heller had 10 kills and six blocks while
Chelsea Neave added 23 assists. Defensively,
Sarah Mlachnik had a match-high 30 kills while
Makenzie Fahnestock and
Rebecca Roembke added 13 and 12, respectively.
UW-Parkside closes out its home schedule on Sunday, hosting Rockhurst University at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
