ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (Nov. 12, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball squad stole the first set of the night but was unable to hang on to the advantage on Tuesday, falling 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-15, 25-15) to host Lewis University in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division showdown inside Neil Carey Arena.
The Rangers (18-11, 8-8 GLVC) tallied four of the opening six points and six of the first nine before the Flyers (21-8, 14-2 GLVC) struck back. Lewis rattled off five straight points to take an 8-6 lead. Lewis continued to hold on to the lead, building a 23-20 advantage before UW-Parkside rattled off five straight points to steal the opening set.
Back-to-back Lewis attack errors pulled the Rangers to within a point before a
Makenzie Fahnestock service ace tied the set at 23. A
Bridget Nickel kill and another Flyer error gave UW-P the 25-23 opening set win.
Lewis led wire-to-wire in set two, claiming the 25-12 win while scoring the opening seven points in never trailing in a 25-15 victory in the third set.
The fourth set was tightly contested in the early going with seven ties before Lewis mounted a 15-5 run to secure the 25-15 victory and earn the match victory.
Kendyl Danelski powered the Rangers with eight kills and four blocks while Fahnestock added seven kills.
Lauren Hickson and
Chelsea Neave had 16 and 14 assists, respectively while
Sarah Mlachnik posted 26 digs.
The Flyers' Kim Vertin posted a match-high 20 kills while Leigh Barea accrued 46 assists.
The Rangers return to the court on Friday at 7 p.m., heading to Lebanon, Ill., for the penultimate game of the regular season against McKendree University.
