Flyers Soar Past Rangers, 3-1

SOMERS, Wis. (Oct. 8, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Volleyball squad was level with Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division leader Lewis University through two sets on Tuesday night before ultimately succumbing 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-15, 25-16) inside DeSimone Gymnasium.

The Rangers (9-7, 3-4 GLVC) surged to an early 7-2 lead in the opening set and led 19-15 before the visiting Flyers (11-4, 7-0 GLVC) tallied 10 of the final 14 points to secure the 25-23 win.

UW-Parkside staked an early lead once again in the second set, owning a 19-14 edge before Lewis surged back into the contest, tying the set at 23. The Rangers responded with a kill by Lauren Hickson and a kill by Makenzie Fahnestock to level the match at one apiece.

The third set was deadlocked at 12 before Lewis pulled away with 13 of the final 16 points to secure the 25-15 win.

UW-P led 9-8 in the fourth set and the game was tied at 11 but the Flyers overpowered the hosts down the stretch with a run of six straight points and six of the final seven points to earn a 25-16 decision to secure the match.

Fahnestock led the Rangers attack with 13 kills while Bridget Nickel and Lisa Gregerson added eight and seven, respectively. Lauren Hickson tallied 30 assists while Sarah Mlachnik and Rebecca Roembke collected 15 and 14 digs, respectively, to pace the defensive efforts.

Kim Vertin netted a game-high 19 kills for Lewis while Leigh Barea tallied 47 assists.

The Rangers return to the court on Friday, hosting Bellarmine University at 7 p.m. for the annual Dig Pink game.
