LEBANON, Ill. (Jan. 19, 2013)-- A big second half shooting effort powered the University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball team to a 62-54 victory over host McKendree University on Saturday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division clash inside the Melvin Price Convocation Center.
The Rangers (9-5, 3-3 GLVC) trailed by one at halftime before catching fire in the second 20 minutes of play, hitting 58.3 percent (14-for-24) of their opportunities from the floor while draining 60 percent (three-for-five) from three point range.
UWP took a 9-2 lead after eight minutes of play as both squads struggled to hit shots in the early going. The host Bearcats (5-9, 0-6 GLVC) answered with a run of their own, scoring the next 10 points to take the lead. McKendree mushroomed its advantage to seven points with 71 seconds left in the first half before the Rangers closed the frame on a 6-0 run, heading into the locker room trailing 24-23.
Jenna Endisch kickstarted the run, burying a three before a
Tara Knapstein layup and an Endisch free throw put the Rangers within one of the Bearcats.
McKendree converted a layup to begin the second half before UW-Parkside rattled off nine straight points to take the lead. UWP would never trail the rest of the way en route to the eight point win.
Endisch canned four three-pointers, finishing the afternoon with a game-high 16 points.
Gaby Bronson came off the bench and added 14 while
Danielle Slivka was the third Ranger in double figures, pouring on 11 points along with five rebounds. Knapstein grabbed a game-high seven rebounds along with eight points while
Sierra West distributed a season-high 10 assists.
Brittany Willis was the only Bearcat in double figures, ending the contest with 15 points.
UW-Parkside shot just 39.1 percent (nine-for-23) in the opening frame before ending the contest converting 48.9 percent (23-for-47) from the floor. The Rangers enjoyed a 36-26 edge in points in the paint while holding a slim 29-26 rebounding edge.
The Rangers return to the friendly confines of DeSimone Gymnasium on Monday, hosting Lewis University at 5:30 p.m. in the first of three straight home games.
