Women's Hoops Slips Past Hawks, 59-57

SOMERS, Wis. (Jan. 10, 2013)-- A Jaleesa Trussell layup with 44 seconds remaining gave host University of Wisconsin-Parkside the lead for good, holding on for a 59-57 victory over Rockhurst University in a Great Lakes Valley Conference women's basketball clash inside DeSimone Gymnasium on Thursday night. The Rangers led by as many as 17-points before the Hawks clawed their way back, turning a potential blowout into a nailbiter.

The Rangers (8-3, 2-1 GLVC) stormed out of the gate, opening up the contest on a 10-2 run. UW-Parkside's lead continued to swell with a 14-2 run gave the home side its largest lead of the night at 26-9 with 10:18 left in the first half. Rockhurst (3-7, 1-2 GLVC) clamped down on the Rangers over the next 10 minutes, shaving the Ranger lead to just seven points at the half. UWP took a 31-25 lead into the locker room at the break as the Hawks held the Rangers to without a field goal the final 5:56 of the half.

Rockhurst claimed the first four points of the second half, capping off a 12-0 run spanning both halves to pull to within two points with 18:01 remaining. A 10-2 spurt increased the Rangers buffer to nine-points with 11:59 left off a Sierra West layup but the Hawks answered the call, mounting a 14-4 run to take their first lead of the game off a MaKayla Grahn bucket with 7:55 remaining.

UWP tallied nine of the next 13 points with a Trussell layup giving the Rangers a 56-52 lead with 2:46 remaining. Rockhurst countered, scoring the next five points to reclaim the lead at 57-56 with 1:36 left off a three-pointer from Kara McFarland. Trussell reclaimed the lead for the Rangers with a layup with 44 seconds left while Danielle Slivka drained a free throw with seven seconds left after grabbing the rebound off a Rockhurst misfire as the Rangers held on for their second straight conference victory.

Jenna Endisch led the Rangers with a team-high 19 points while dishing out four assists. Slivka added 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds while Gaby Bronson tallied eight points while distributing a game-high six assists.

Lauren Meyers came off the bench and paced the Hawks, scoring a game-high 22 points. McFarland and Kendall Hart both chipped in nine points while Taylor Skala tallied a game-high seven steals.

UWP hit 54.5 percent (12-for-22) of its shots in the opening half, finishing the contest shooting 50 percent (23-for-46) from the floor. Rockhurst finished shooting 47.7 percent (21-for-44) from the field while enjoying a 32-6 edge in bench points.

The Rangers close out their homestand on Saturday, squaring off against William Jewell College at 1 p.m. inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
