ALLENDALE, Mich. (Sept. 8, 2012)-- Day two at the Riverfront Hotel Grand Rapids Classic followed a similar script as day one for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball team as the Rangers finished the tournament with a pair of 3-0 victories on Saturday.
The Rangers (7-1) defeated the University of the District of Columbia 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-19) to begin the day before taking down Lake Superior State University 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-21) in the team's matinee match, wrapping up the Grand Rapids Classic with a perfect 4-0 mark. UW-Parkside opened the tournament on Friday with 3-0 wins over Stonehill College and Seton Hill University.
Bridget Nickel and
Makenzie Fahnestock were honored for their performance during the tournament, both earning a spot on the six-player All-Tournament team.
UWP never trailed against the Firebirds (2-4) in the three set victory. The Rangers wrapped up the opening set 25-15 after scoring the final five points while recording the first eight points of the second set. 11 of the 13 straight points scored came off the serve of
Sarah Mlachnik. UDC kept the third set close but could not hold off the Rangers who came away with the 25-19 win to preserve the sweep.
Kendyl Danelski led UW-Parkside with 12 kills while Nickel tallied 11.
Chelsea Neave accumulated 17 assists while Mlachnik recorded 10 digs.
Against the Lakers (3-5), UW-Parkside and LSSU were tied at 11 in the first set before the Rangers rolled off 14 of the next 19 points to secure the 25-16 win. UWP tallied the first six points of set two en route to a 25-11 blowout before securing the match victory with a 25-21 win in set three.
Danelski and Nickel each tallied eight kills while Neave and
Tricia Tirabassi finished with 21 and 19 assists, respectively. Mlachnik added 15 digs with
Shannon Curtis chipping in 11.
UW-Parkside returns to the court on Friday, traveling to the University of Indianapolis where the team will open up Great Lakes Valley Conference play against the Greyhounds at 6 p.m.
