ALLENDALE, Mich. (Sept. 7, 2012)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball squad encountered little resistance on Friday at the Riverfront Hotel Grand Rapids Classic, posting a pair of 3-0 victories. The Rangers opened the day by downing Stonehill College 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-20), before rolling Seton Hill University 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-19) in the nightcap.
Stonehill (1-1) held a 16-15 advantage in the opening set of the day before UW-Parkside (5-1) tallied 10 of the next 15 points to post the 25-21 set victory. The Rangers thoroughly dominated set two 25-16 with the Rangers rattling off six straight points at one junction, including five off the serve of
Bridget Nickel. Set three was anticlimactic with the Rangers notching the first five points off the serve of
Shannon Curtis in the wire-to-wire 25-20 victory to secure the match.
Nickel tallied 12 kills and three service aces to lead the Ranger (5-1) attack against the Skyhawks while
Chelsea Neave and
Tricia Tirabassi contributed 15 and 14 assists, respectively.
Defensively,
Sarah Mlachnik finished with a team-high 13 digs,
Shannon Curtis collected nine while
Sonja Burnson had a match-high eight blocks (two solo, six assisted).
Despite the narrow margin, UWP never trailed against Seton Hill (4-2) in the opening set, earning the hard fought 25-23 victory. The Rangers fell behind just once in set two at 9-8 before closing the game with a 17-11 edge while leaving the Griffins in the dust after a 12-12 tie in the third set, prevailing 15-19.
Against the Griffins (4-2), Nickel posted 10 kills while
Makenzie Fahnestock and
Kendyl Danelski added nine and eight, respectively. Neave amassed 21 assists while Tirabassi finished with 17 assists and 11 digs. Mlachnik once again paced the defensive efforts with a dozen digs.
The Rangers close out the Grand Rapids Classic on Saturday, taking on University of the District of Columbia at 10 a.m. before finishing out the day at 2 p.m. against Lake Superior State University.
