SOMERS, Wis. (Sept. 29, 2012)-- A slow start did not deter the University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball squad on Saturday afternoon as the Rangers shook off an opening set defeat to roll Great Lakes Valley Conference rival McKendree University 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12) inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
The Rangers (11-5, 3-4 GLVC) got off to a rocky start, yielding the first six points of the opening set and fell behind by a 13-5 count. UW-Parkside narrowed the Bearcats' (6-10, 2-5 GLVC) advantage to just three at 15-12 but visiting McKendree answered with nine of the next 12 to grab the 14-15 lead. UWP mounted a late charge off the serve of
Chelsea Neave, netting six straight points before a kill by Rachel Nelson closed the book on the opening set with the Bearcats prevailing 25-21 with 11 points coming courtesy of Ranger attack errors.
The second set featured 10 ties with neither team holding a lead of more than three as the homestanding Rangers prevailed 25-23. In set three, UW-Parkside turned a 18-16 lead into a 22-16 buffer en route to the 25-18 win before dominating the third set, racing out to a 15-4 lead and tallying six blocks to pull out the 25-12 victory to secure the match win.
Bridget Nickel returned to the lineup and led the Rangers with 16 kills while also tallying 10 digs and seven blocks.
Meghan Conley had 12 kills while
Chelsea Neave led the team with 20 assists.
Sarah Mlachnik had 14 digs while
Lauren Grady,
Kendyl Danelski and
Sonja Burnson all finished with six blocks.
Hannah Wessel led the Bearcats with 15 kills while Abby Hanger had a game-high 30 assists and Maddie Kelly had 16 digs.
The Rangers return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 6, making the trek to Rolla, Mo. to take on Missouri S&T University at 5 p.m.
