PRAIRIE DU SAC, Wis. (Sept. 26, 2012)-- Unfazed by an early deficit, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball team captured the final two sets of the night on Wednesday, emerging with the 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 12-25, 25-22, 15-8) victory over Upper Iowa University in a neutral site non-conference showdown at Sauk Prairie High School.
The Rangers (10-4) surged to an early 14-6 lead in the opening set before the Peacocks (8-6) closed to within three at 22-19. Undeterred UW-Parkside notched three of the final five points to secure the 25-21 opening set victory.
The tide turned midway through the second set as Upper Iowa tallied 10 of the final 15 points for the 25-20 triumph. UW-Parkside scored the first three points of the third set before yielding 11 of the next 12, eventually stumbling 25-12 and forcing a must win situation for the duration of the match.
Tied at 21, UW-Parkside claimed four of the final five points of set four to secure the 25-22 win before walking off with a 15-8 victory in the decisive fifth set to earn the match victory.
Brooke Schowalter finished with a team-high 14 kills for the Rangers while
Tricia Tirabassi and
Chelsea Neave tallied 23 and 19 assists, respectively.
Sarah Mlachnik tallied 23 digs defensively while
Kendyl Danelski was a force at the net, finishing the contest with a game-high nine blocks.
Melanie Behnke had a game-high 16 kills for the Peacocks while Hailey Brown claimed 48 of UIU's 53 assists on the night. Amanda Weiss led the defensive effort with 21 digs.
The Rangers, winners of two straight, return to the court on Friday, hosting Bellarmine University at 7 p.m. for Dig Pink Night inside DeSimone Gymnasium. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness and research.
