Sunday Split Gives Rangers Three of Four Against KWC

Chris Glynn was 5-for-8 with three runs scored on Sunday
Owensboro, Ky. – The UW-Parkside baseball team had to go extra innings on Sunday to earn the series over Kentucky Wesleyan College. Parkside scored three runs in the ninth inning of game one to knock off the Panthers, 7-4. KWC split the doubleheader with a 1-0 win in eight innings in game two.

The Rangers out-hit the Panthers in both games on Sunday while getting a base runner in all but two innings over the course of the day. Six players recorded at least one multi-hit game as Parkside surpassed last season's win total in moving to 16-25 overall (9-19 GLVC).

The team will return to Oberbruner Field for the final home games of the season next weekend against first-place, Northern Kentucky University. Game time on both days is set for 12:00 p.m.

Below are recaps from Sunday's games against Kentucky Wesleyan.

Game One (Box Score)
The Rangers turned in one of their best offensive performances of the year pounding out a season-high 15 hits. It was their last one that turned out to be the difference in a back-and-forth contest.

Eric Abel's RBI-single in the second got Parkside on the board. After the Panthers tied it up, Chris Glynn and Taylor Nehls came up with consecutive doubles to push back out in front.

KWC scored two in the fifth against Andy Stochl to regain the lead at 3-2.

The Rangers answered to flip the lead once again. Cody Gilles drove in Glynn with a base hit to tie it in the sixth. After a walk to Abel loaded the bases, Kirk Haviland was hit by a pitch to drive in a run and make it 4-3

The Panthers tied it for the fourth time in the bottom of the sixth, and after a scoreless seventh, the game moved into extra innings.

Alex Rejniak pitched out a major jam in the eighth to keep his team in the game. With runners on second and third and just one out, he delivered a key strike out and followed it up with a grounder to send it to the ninth.

The Rangers broke through for good in the ninth scoring as Gilles came through with a bases loaded hit to score two runs. Abel followed it up with a sacrifice fly to cap the rally.

The Panthers threatened to rally in the ninth by loading the bases with nobody out. But Rejniak stepped up again by retiring the next three hitters to end the game. His three innings of scoreless work earned him his first win of the season.

Offensively Glynn, Abel, and Mike Anderson all had three hits. Gilles had two hits and three RBI while Corey Stonelake went 2-for-5.

Game Two (Box Score)
Parkside put multiple runners on in six of the eight innings but couldn't push one across in support of Jacob Chandler. He took a tough-luck loss allowing one earned run in 7 2/3 innings. He limited the Panthers to just four hits and four walks while striking out six.

The Rangers had a great chance in the opening inning with one out after a double by Stonelake and a single by Glynn. But Nehls lined out to left and Anderson bounced out to end the frame.

They threatened again in the second when back-to-back hits by Haviland and Ben Korman loaded the bases with nobody out. But a strikeout and fly out resulted in a scoreless inning.

With Chandler cruising on the mound the Rangers looked to take the lead in the fourth. Gilles singled and Abel walked to get things going. Haviland executed a sacrifice to advance both runners. That's when Korman flew out to right field with Gilles tagging at third. Unfortunately the throw nipped Gilles at the plate to keep the game scoreless.

KWC finally broke through in extra innings to get the win. With the bases loaded the Rangers tried to turn an inning-ending double play but the batter was safe at first and the winning run scored.

Glynn, Gilles, and Haviland all had two hits as the Rangers dominated that column, 9-4. They did however strand 12 runners after leaving 11 on-base in the opener.
