Puma Pitching Stymies Ranger Bats

The Pumas held the Rangers at bay Sunday at the Case Softball Complex
Somers, Wis. – The UW-Parkside softball team was unable to generate any offense in a pair of games against Saint Joseph's College on Sunday. The Pumas earned 4-0 and 6-1 victories over the Rangers at Case Softball Complex to improve to 20-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Parkside fell to 4-26.

The Rangers will play their final conference home games of the season on Wednesday afternoon against Lewis University. First pitch of game one is set for 3:00 p.m.

Below are recaps of Sunday's games.

Game One (Box Score)
The Pumas used their power in game one scoring three of their four runs on home runs including a two-run shot in the first inning. Kristin Kleinmeyer limited Saint Joe's to just six hits in the contest but those big swings meant the difference.

The Rangers threatened on a couple of occasions, beginning with Bridget Walters one-out triple in the second. They also put two runners on in the seventh on hits by Diana Gordon and Natalie Shank before stranding them to end the game.

In all, Parkside stranded five runners in the opener. They equaled Saint Joe's six hits in the contest with six different players getting into the column.

Kleinmeyer went the distance allowing three earned runs without walking a batter.

Game Two (Box Score)
In game two the Rangers created plenty of scoring opportunities but ended up leaving 11 runners on base. They had runners in all but one inning but couldn't push one across until the seventh.

The Pumas got on the board early against Kelynn Sporer with a couple of hits in the first inning. They added three more in the third with a pair of doubles to help build a 4-0 lead.

A two-run double in the fourth stretched the advantage to 6-0.

Parkside got two on to start the fifth on back-to-back hits by Kyla Walczak and Cecie Portillo before three straight outs ended the threat. A pair of walks started a similar rally in the sixth, but once again the Pumas pitched out of it.

The Rangers were able to break through in the seventh when three straight walks loaded the bases with nobody out.

Lauren Vitiello then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to drive in the first run of the day to make it 6-1. Kirsten Luevano followed with a base hit to re-load the bases with one away.

But a strikeout and grounder ended Parkside's hopes of a comeback and ended the game.

Once again, the Rangers collected six hits, all coming from different players. Nine of the 11 players left on base were stranded in scoring position.
