Somers, Wis. - The UW-Parkside baseball team snapped out of its offensive funk, scoring 14 runs en route to a 14-10 non-conference victory over Cardinal Stritch on Tuesday afternoon at Oberbruner Field. The Rangers put up ten runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings to take control against the Wolves.
All nine players in the starting lineup recorded a hit as the Rangers overcame and early three-run deficit to record the win.
Eric Abel finished with three hits while four players knocked in two runs in improving the Rangers to 12-19 on the season.
Josh Hudnut earned the victory on the mound going six innings and striking out six. He allowed nine runs but just four were earned on a cold and windy day on the Parkside campus.
After Cardinal Stritch scored two in the top of the first to grab the lead, the Rangers came right back to move in front. Two hits and a walk loaded the bases to start the game. Sac flies by
Cody Gilles and
Chris Glynn, along with a run-scoring single by
Mike Anderson, gave Parkside a 3-2 lead.
The Wolves opened up a three-run cushion by scoring four times over the next two innings. A couple of costly errors led to all four runs being unearned and Stritch took a 6-3 lead all the way to the fifth inning.
That's when the Rangers were able to wrestle control away from the visitors. They scored four times in the fifth on just three hits. Gilles and Glynn each had RBI-hits, Anderson drove one in with a groundout, and
Brad Weatherman finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
They took that 7-6 lead into the bottom of the sixth when they added six more runs.
Corey Stonelake led off the inning with a routine grounder to shortstop that was thrown away. The ball took a crazy carom down the right field line and turned into an improbable four-base error.
They added five more in the inning as they sent 12 hitters to the plate. Abel and
Kirk Haviland knocked in runs on consecutive hits. Brennan added one on a ground out and Nehls was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The final run made it 13-6 heading to the seventh inning.
Stritch rallied in the seventh to get within three. They scored four runs as they chased Hudnut from the game on three straight singles.
Alex Rejniak come on and allowed just one more hit in the inning before getting out of the jam.
The Rangers scored one more in the eighth to provide the final margin. Nehls bounced into a fielder's choice to plate Brennan for the 14
th run.
Rejniak finished the ninth with a couple of strikeouts to pick up his first save.
Nehls and Stonelake each added two hits and three runs scored. He, along with Gilles, Anderson, and Glynn all drove in two.
Parkside will now prepare for a four-game series this weekend with Southern Indiana. Both doubleheaders will start at Oberbruner Field at 12:00 p.m.
