Late Inning Rally Leads Softball to Split

Natalie Shank delivered a walk-off win for the Rangers in game one on Sunday
Somers, Wis. - The UW-Parkside softball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal a 4-3 victory from Bellarmine University in game one of Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader. The Knights rebounded to take game two, 8-3.

Lauren Vitiello's two-run double tied the game with one out in the seventh before Natalie Shank won it with an RBI-hit. The Rangers are now 4-16 in conference play. Bellarmine finished the day at 12-8.

Parkside will start a busy week on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Lewis beginning at 3:00 p.m. The team will play six games over a five day stretch.

Game One (Box Score)
Bellarmine took at 2-0 lead into the sixth inning when the Ranger offense got going. Shank doubled to start the frame and was sacrificed over by Kelynn Sporer. Ashley Nowdomski then drove her in with a ground out to cut the lead in half.

The Parkside defense committed a pair of errors in the seventh, contributing to a run for the Knights to rebuild a 3-1 advantage. But the Rangers weren't to be denied as the top of the order conjured some late-inning magic.

Diana Gordon doubled to the gap with one out to start the rally. Colleen Cummings singled and moved to second on the throw as Gordon held up at third.

That's when Vitiello continued her torrid month, lining a double to left-center, scoring both runs and tying the game. Kirsten Luevano then moved Vitiello to third setting the stage for Shank.

She ripped a base-hit back up the box to score pinch runner Kira Cooper and send the Rangers into a celebration.

Sporer was the beneficiary getting the complete game victory. All three runs she allowed were unearned in her second win of the season.

Vitiello led the offense going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Shank and Gordon also had two hits apiece.

Game Two (Box Score)
In game two the Knights jumped on the Ranger pitching staff scoring seven runs in the first two innings. They batted around in a six-run second inning to open up a comfortable lead.

Ashley Nowdomski got nearly half of them back in the second inning as she launched a three-run home run. Luevano and Shank started the frame with singles before being able to walk home on the Nowdomski smash.

From there the Rangers were unable to sustain another rally. Cummings and Luevano each had a hit the rest of the way but the squad couldn't put together another comeback.

Luevano finished the game 2-for-3 to lead the attack.
