Streaking Greyhounds Stop Rangers

Lauren Vittiello was 3-for-5 against the Greyhounds on Sunday
Indianapolis – The UW-Parkside softball team ran into a red-hot University of Indianapolis squad on Sunday afternoon at Baumgartner Field. The sixth-ranked Greyhounds increased their winning streak to 18 games with wins of 5-0 and 10-1 (six innings) over the Rangers.

UW-Parkside will now return home for 12 straight games at the Case Softball Complex. That home stand begins on Tuesday with a 2:00 p.m. start against Minnesota Duluth.

Below are recaps from each of Sunday's game in Indianapolis.

Game One (Box Score)
The Rangers couldn't get their offense going against Indy starter Jennifer DeMotte. The junior, who threw a perfect game on Saturday in the first-ever event on Baumgartner Field, was nearly as effective Sunday. Parkside could only muster three hits while DeMotte recorded 11 strikeouts for the win.

Kristin Kleinmeyer was solid in the circle for the Rangers, throwing a complete game and allowing three earned runs against the Greyhounds. Indianapolis jumped out in front with three, first inning runs before adding two in the their final at-bat.

Lauren Vitiello had two of the Rangers three hits, including a lead-off double in the seventh. Natalie Shank reached on a bunt single with two outs in the inning but DeMotte came back to get Kira Cooper to end the game.

Game Two (Box Score)
Parkside's Kelynn Sporer and Indianapolis' Audrey Ernst matched zeroes for the first three innings before the Greyhounds broke through in the fourth. Colleen Cummings picked up singles in both the first and third innings but the Rangers couldn't move her over.

Indy started the fourth with back-to-back doubles to get on the board. A walk, base hit, and a costly error led to three unearned runs to complete the rally.

The Rangers scored their first run in the top of the fifth after a leadoff single by Ashley Nowdomski. She moved to second immediately on a sacrifice but by Cecie Portillo. After an out, Kyla Walczak bounced one to the right side but it was misplayed at first, allowing Nowdomski to score and make it 4-1.

The Greyhounds opened things up with three more in the bottom half against Hayley Schneider. After a scoreless frame for the Rangers they ended the game prematurely on three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Vitiello was 1-for-2 in the game and finished the doubleheader 3-for-5. Sporer took the loss allowing four runs in four innings with just one of them being earned.

Parkside begins a busy week on Tuesday when they welcome Minnesota Duluth to town for a 2:00 p.m. start to their doubleheader. The two teams will meet again Wednesday for two games beginning at 12:00 p.m.
