SOMERS, Wis. (Nov. 3, 2012)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside sent 10th-ranked University of Indianapolis just its second Great Lakes Valley Conference defeat of the season on Saturday afternoon, capturing the first two sets of the day and finishing off the Greyhounds 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 17-25, 20-25, 15-8) on Senior Day inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
The Rangers (19-9, 8-8 GLVC) weathered a late charge by the 10th-ranked Greyhounds in the opening set, earning the 25-23 victory with
Kendyl Danelski tallying a kill for the decisive point. UW-Parkside racked up the first four points of set two before UIndy evened the score with four straight. The Rangers jumped back up with a 17-14 lead with UIndy again responding to tie the set before the Rangers finished it off with a Danelski kill, once again closing the set in favor of the Rangers, this time by a 25-22 count.
UIndy never trailed en route to a 25-17 win in set three before jumping out to a 7-0 lead in set four off the serve of Meghan Binkerd in a 25-17 Greyhound win, forcing a fifth set. UW-Parkside claimed the first five points on the afternoon's final set with four coming off the serve of
Bridget Nickel. UWP maintained at least a five-point buffer the rest of the way, earning the 15-8 set win and the 3-2 upset victory off a
Brooke Schowalter kill for the Rangers second straight win.
Nickel and Danelski paced the Rangers with 14 kills apiece while Schowalter tallied 11.
Tricia Tirabassi, playing in her final home match as a Ranger, collected 32 assists with
Chelsea Neave adding 19. On the defensive end,
Sarah Mlachnik accumulated a team-high 24 digs with Nickel adding 18. Schowalter and Danelski each tallied seven blocks with Nickel collecting six.
Kourtney Crawford led UIndy with 14 kills, Blinkerd accounted for 50 of the Greyhounds 58 assists while Amy Oldenburg had a game-high 27 digs.
Saturday's match was Senior Day as Tirabassi and
Shannon Curtis were both honored pregame for their contributions to the program. The Rangers closed their 2012 home slate with a 6-4 record.
UW-Parkside returns to the court on Friday, making the trek to Owensboro, Ky. to face Kentucky Wesleyan College in a 7 p.m. GLVC clash.
