INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Nov. 16, 2012)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside's four match win streak came to an untimely end Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament, falling 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-14) to 19th-ranked University of Indianapolis in a rubber match inside the Indy South Sports Academy.
UIndy (27-6) claimed the first three points of the opening set before the Rangers (21-10) responded, notching six of the next eight to grab the 6-5 advantage. The Greyhounds countered, closing out the set on a 20-8 run, posting the 25-14 victory.
UW-Parkside secured an early lead in set two, owning the first two points of the set and three of the first four. The teams traded barbs with the score tied at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6 and 7-7 before the Greyhounds rattled off five straight, forcing a UWP timeout. The Rangers scored three straight off the timeout, pulling to within two at 12-10 before Indianapolis rolled off 13 of the next 19 to earn the 25-16 set win.
The Greyhounds never trailed in set three, seizing the first four points of the set. UWP clawed back, trailing just two at 9-7 and again at 10-8 before the top seed and East Division regular season champions closed the set and match on a 15-6 run to secure the win and advance to tomorrow's semifinals against Rockhurst University.
Brooke Schowalter led the Rangers with six kills.
Tricia Tirabassi and
Chelsea Neave each posted 10 assists while
Sarah Mlachnik led the squad with 10 digs.
UIndy's Kourtney Crawford post a match-high 12 kills, Meghan Binkerd recorded 40 of the Hounds 45 assists while Amy Oldenburg led the defense with 16 digs. Seven of the squad's 11 blocks came off the hands of UIndy's Julia Watkins.
Friday's contest was a rubber match after each team prevailed on their home court during the regular season. UIndy downed the Rangers 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-8) on Sept. 14 while UW-Parkside returned the favor on Nov. 3, shocking the Greyhounds 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 17-25, 20-25, 15-8) on Senior Day.
