Volleyball Edges Hawks in Five Set Nailbiter

SOMERS, Wis. (Oct. 20, 2012)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball squad extended its win streak to five on Saturday afternoon, edging Rockhurst University, 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12) in a see-saw Great Lakes Valley Conference affair at DeSimone Gymnasium.

The Hawks (18-5, 7-3 GLVC) stole the opening set 25-21, scoring six of the final eight points after the score was deadlocked at 19. The Rangers (16-6, 5-5 GLVC) responded in the second set, rattling off the opening six points off the serve of Shannon Curtis. UW-Parkside held a 15-10 buffer before the Hawks crawled back into it, closing to within two at 19-17. The Rangers led 24-19 before Rockhurst rattled off four straight points before the home side finished off the set with a Heidi Gregerson kill for the 25-23 win. UW-Parkside claimed five of the final six points to secure set three 25-21, while Rockhurst stayed alive by scratching out a 25-23 win in the fourth set.

Rockhurst roared out to a 12-9 lead in the fifth and final set before the Rangers tallied the match's final six points, stealing the set 15-12 with the final five points coming off the serve of Bridget Nickel.

Nickel paced UW-Parkside with 23 kills while also collecting 17 digs. Chelsea Neave had 29 assists while Tricia Tirabassi added 25. Sarah Mlachnik collected a match-high 42 digs on the defensive end while Kendyl Danelski had five blocks.

Kelsey Stratmen led Rockhurst with 21 kills, Victoria Mahl posted 34 digs while Whitney Kostal posted a match-high 40 assists.

The Rangers return to the court on Sunday, closing out the homestand by hosting William Jewell College with first serve slated for 1 p.m.
