AURORA, Ill. (Oct. 13, 2012)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside steamrolled the competition on Saturday in day two of the fifth annual Mizuno GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Volleyball Tournament, rolling Malone University 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-22) to open the day before downing Walsh University 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-20) to close out the afternoon at the Great Lakes Center.
Trailing 12-10 in the opener, the Rangers rattled off eight straight points with seven coming off the serve of
Tricia Tirabassi. UWP (15-6) pushed its advantage to 22-17 before the Pioneers (10-8) fought back, closing to within a point at 24-23 before a
Bridget Nickel kill ended the set in favor of the Rangers.
A 9-1 run in set two turned a 5-5 deadlock into a 14-6 lead for the Rangers en route to the commanding 25-15 win before sealing the match with a 25-22 victory in set three.
Nickel led the offensive charge for the Rangers with 15 kills with
Kendyl Danelski tallying 11.
Chelsea Neave collected 20 assists while Tirabassi collected 19. On the defensive end,
Sarah Mlachnik collected 13 digs with Nickel and
Shannon Curtis each finishing with nine.
Hannah Haver led Malone with 10 kills. Jackie Schwamberger had a match-high 30 kills while also recording a team-high 10 digs.
Against Walsh (6-11), the Rangers posted a 7-1 run turning a 13-13 tie into a 20-14 lead in the 25-17 opening set victory. UWP tallied the opening four points and never trailing in set two with the 25-13 victory before holding on for the 25-20 win to secure the match and finish the tournament undefeated.
Nickel led the Rangers with 12 kills while Tirabassi accrued 20 assists and Mlachnik tallied 20 digs. Julianne O'Donnell paced the Cavaliers with 11 kills while Hannah Duran led Walsh with 26 assists and eight digs.
The Rangers return to the court next Saturday, hosting Rockhurst University at 5 p.m. inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
