Late Drought Dooms Ranger Women in St. Louis

Parkside was unable to overcome a late drought in Saturday's loss to the Saints
Box Score

The UW-Parkside women's basketball team was never able to get in sync on Saturday in dropping a 62-55 decision at Maryville University. The Rangers battled to a 50-50 tie but then went six minutes and two seconds without a point in falling to 2-2 in conference play at 9-3 overall. The Saints are also 2-2 in the GLVC and now 6-6 on the season.

Jadee Rooney scored 18 points and is now one shy of third on the school's all-time scoring list. Brittany Beyer had 14 but was held to just four in the second half. Jaleesa Trussell finished with six points and a game-high ten rebounds.

Abby Deuthman led Maryville with 21 points and eight boards while Shelby Miller joined her in double figures with ten.

The Saints led for the majority of the first half building as much as a seven-point lead. Parkside surged before the break and trailed by only a point heading to the locker room. The Rangers were their own worst enemy at times in the first half shooting just 53.3% from the free throw line (8-for-15).

The Rangers fired out of the gates in the second half scoring seven points on their first three possessions. Rooney knocked down a three, Cheryl Leyns had two free throws, and Rooney added a slicing lay-up to make it 36-32 just over a minute into the half.

Maryville pushed back with a 16-6 run of their own to take a six point lead midway through the period. Samantha Robinson's jumper gave the Saints a 48-42 advantage with 12:13 left.

Parkside countered by scoring eight of the next ten points to force the 50-50 deadlock but went cold from there. The Rangers went 0-for-7 with four turnovers until the final minute. That proved to be the team's undoing as Maryville was able to open a lead they would not relinquish.

The Saints closed things out at the free throw line, going 10-for-12 in the game. Maryville came into the game leading the country in free throw shooting at just under 84%.

The Rangers forced 21 turnovers but shot just 35.0% from the floor including a 31.4% second half. They were 3-for-15 from behind the three-point line while Maryville finished at 50.0% (6-for-12).

Parkside will look to rebound from the loss on Thursday when they host Illinois Springfield at the DeSimone Gymnasium. Game time on Thursday is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
