Defense Keys Rangers to Win Over Tritons

Brittany Beyer became the school's second all-time leading scorer with 21 against Missouri-St. Louis
Box Score The UW-Parkside women's basketball team used a strong defensive effort to earn a 69-43 road win over Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday night. The 17th-ranked Rangers improved to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The Rangers forced 24 turnovers and limited the Tritons to just 30.6% from the floor as they grabbed an 11-0 lead in the first five minutes and never had it drop below nine the rest of the way.

Brittany Beyer hit three straight baskets to key the early rally and carried the Rangers offensively in the first half. With Jadee Rooney and Amy Selk saddled with foul trouble, Beyer picked up the slack scoring 17 first half points on 7-for-13 on the floor and 3-for-3 at the line. Her first basket moved her into second place on the school's all-time scoring list passing Carrie Weir (2001-05).

A couple of late first half three's by UMSL's Caitlyn Moody trimmed what was a 17-point advantage down to 11 at the break; with the Rangers holding a 31-20 lead.

The cushion hovered around 14 points for the early part of the second half but things got tenuous as Beyer, Selk, and Rooney found themselves on the bench with three fouls. Another three by Moody cut it to nine and made for an uncomfortable stretch for the Rangers.

With the score at 44-35, Parkside answered in a big way going on a 16-2 run thanks to the play of Jaleesa Trussell and Selk. The duo combined for 12 of the 16 points during the critical stretch as they boosted the lead to 60-37.

A late lay-up by Kiah Simon pushed the lead to 30 before the Rangers settled with the 26 point win.

Selk finished with the night 14 points and 10 rebounds; her first double-double of the season. Trussell ended with 12 points on 4-of-6 from the floor.

The Rangers finished the night 48.9% from the field and got to line 31 times, converting 21.

Parkside finishes the road trip Saturday in St. Louis when they head across town to Maryville University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. against the Saints.
