The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball team got off to a slow start and was swept in a non-conference match on Tuesday night. The Rangers fell behind early in the first set and were unable to recover in a loss at Winona State University (25-17, 25-18, 25-23).
Bridget Nickel led the Rangers with 12 kills.
Addie Kramer had a season-high 12 digs to go with seven kills.
Cayla Flood added 28 assists and seven digs.
Parkside fell behind early as the Warriors jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the first set. The Rangers got to within seven before Winona closed out game one at 25-17.
Things didn't start well in game two but the Rangers quickly responded scoring seven of nine points to tie the set at 10.
Cassy Marx had a kill and a block in the run to help get back to even.
Unfortunately Winona answered by scoring eight of the next 10 points to grab control. The Warriors hit .350 in the set and got five kills from Kate Horihan to win it 25-18.
Parkside took an early lead in the third set as they looked to extend the match. A kill by Marx made it 7-4 to give the Rangers their biggest lead of the set. Nickel had two kills to maintain the lead before Winona came back.
The Warriors went on a 9-3 run to seemingly put things away at 17-13 but the Rangers weren't done yet. Another kill by Marx, one by
Adrienne Uthe, and two straight by Nickel tied the match at 18.
Things see-sawed back and forth the rest of the set before Winona finally prevailed. Kramer had two set tying kills of her own, the last one evened the game at 23. But the Warriors benefited from a Parkside service error before Bekah Saugen slammed down the final point to secure the win.
The Rangers will next be in action this weekend when they head to St. Louis for a two-match trip. Parkside returns to GLVC play Saturday against Missouri-St. Louis. They'll wrap-up the set across town with a match Sunday against Maryville University.
