Volleyball Can't Overcome Slow Start at Indy

The Greyhounds jumped out early in the first set and went on to the victory Saturday in Indianapolis

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball team was unable to keep its momentum going as the Rangers fell to Indianapolis in straight sets on Saturday. The Greyhounds took control of the match with a 25-15 win in the first set and went on to finish things off 25-20 and 25-17. The Rangers were able to complete a busy eight days in conference play at 3-2 before heading home next weekend.

“We just got beat by a mature volleyball team and program today,” said head coach Christine Paciero. “We didn't stay organized or up with the pace of play.”

Indy burst out of the gates with a 7-2 start and never looked back in the opening set. Caroline Langer's kill did cut the lead to 13-11 but the Greyhounds scored the next seven points to regain control. They finished the set on a 12-4 run to take a 1-0 lead.

The Rangers responded early in game two when Bridget Nickel recorded a kill to give them an 8-6 lead. Again, the Greyhounds put together a 9-4 run to turn the tables on the visitors and get back in front. A kill by Langer got Parkside back to even but it's the closest they would get the rest of the way in dropping the set 25-20.

Another close set early was opened up by Indy with a 9-2 spurt midway through the stanza. Parkside was able to get no closer than five from there on out as Indianapolis completed a perfect weekend at home after defeating Lewis on Friday night.

Langer led the Rangers offensively with 13 kills while Bower again topped the defense with 15 digs. Parkside was limited to a .152 hitting percentage in falling to 3-2 on the season in GLVC play. Indy moved into a second place time at 4-1 in the league.

Despite the loss, Paciero was encouraged by what some of the things she saw from her team in the first week-plus of conference play.

“We had an off weekend but the heart and spirit of our team is definitely developing,” she said. “Girls like (Courtney) Flood, (Courtney) Stack, (Bridget) Nickel, and Bower … their level of effort is increasing every day and match. They are truly raising the bar for our program.”

Parkside will return to the DeSimone Gymnasium next weekend for a pair of GLVC matches. First up on Friday night is nationally ranked Northern Kentucky University. The match with the Norse will begin at 7:00 p.m.
