The UW-Parkside Men's Soccer team got its first opportunity to play a different colored jersey on Saturday. On a day set-up to honor recently retired Hall of Fame Coach, Rick Kilps, the Rangers fell to Division I Marquette, 6-1.
"It was a good chance for us to get out and see what we need to get better at," said Head Coach
Jason Zitzke. "We've still got a lot we need to work on."
Marquette, who played an exhibition match earlier in the week, utilized its size and speed advantage from the onset as the scored in the opening minute. Six-foot-seven inch Axel Sjoberg finished off a header to put the Golden Eagles ahead.
They added a flurry of goals just shy of the midway point in the first half starting with a penalty kick in the 25th minute. All told Marquette scored five first half goals including two from Andy Huftalin a minute apart.
The Rangers got on the board in the 73rd minute when
Spencer Bursten finished off a pass from
Dustin Ashley.
“Spencer made a great run, stayed under control, and finished,” said Zitzke.
Parkside was much sharper in the second half limiting the Golden Eagles to just five shots on goal and eight for the period. Time of possession also was closer to even after a tough first half.
“The second half we were a lot more organized, composed, and poised,” said Zitzke. “Things definitely got better but like I said we've got a way to go.”
