Chicago- The UW-Parkside softball team completed its 2011 season with a doubleheader split at St. Xavier University. St. Xavier took game one, 8-0, before Parkside came back to win the finale, 6-4. The Rangers finish the year at 13-31 overall. The Cougars, who are ranked 17th in the nation in NAIA, are now 32-14.
The day did not get off to a good start as the Parkside bats were silenced by St. Xavier's, Megan Nonnemacher. She limited the Rangers to five hits and two walks in the complete game shutout. Parkside once again struggled with runners in scoring position going 0-for-8 in the opener.
The game was scoreless until the third when Ashley Hunter's two-run home run broke the seal. The Cougars ended the game prematurely in the sixth with a three-run homer by Courtney Murphy.
Lexi Sotiros collected three hits in the opener.
The Rangers got their revenge in game two, jumping out to leads of 3-0 and 6-1 before holding on for the win. Diana Gordon capped a fifth inning rally with a two-out, two-run single to provide Jill Vondrak the necessary run support.
Kirsten Luevano's two-run homer in the first got the Rangers on the board. Meg McCormick's had a groundout in the third to make it 3-0.
After St. Xavier got within two, the Rangers put up a three spot to regain control. McCormick had another RBI, this one scoring Christine Holthus, and it was 4-1. Gordon then delivered to account for a seemingly comfortable lead.
The Cougars nearly mounted the big comeback. They scored three in the sixth and put the tying runs on base with just one out. But Vondrak came back to coax a pop-up and groundout to end the threat.
The game marked the culmination of the UW-Parkside careers of McCormick, Holthus, Krista Kelly, Nicki Ekstrom, and Erin Schneider. Holthus went 2-for-3 with three runs scored while McCormick drove in two. Kelly reached three times (hit, two walks), Schneider walked twice, and Ekstrom had a hit.
